A Brief History of 30 Years
The South London Baseball Association was founded on September 2, 1980 as a result of the amalgamation of the Cleardale, White Oaks and Westminster Park Baseball Leagues. The association was created to govern and promote baseball activities for the age divisions of: Tyke (7-10), Peewee (11-12), Bantam (13-14) and Midget (15-16).The founding members of the association were:
President: Stan Latawiec
Treasurer: Bob Shaw
Secretary: Marty Collier
As the association began to grow in the early 1980s, programs were expanded to include 5 and 6 and 17 to 21 year old boys. Additionally, the league created an all girls fastball program that encompassed all age divisions (5-21).
Since 1980, the South London Baseball Association has seen numerous members pass through its doors and has delivered programs to more than 20,000 area youth with select few individuals continuing onto careers in Major League Baseball, an accomplishment our founders are sure to be proud of! Programs have, and continue to, include all skill levels, for boys and girls, in: Competitive, Select and House League offerings.
Today, while our membership numbers have dropped, our program remains strong. The current operating government of the association has introduced new partnerships with Softball Ontario, Baseball Ontario and numerous provincial health initiatives including ParticipAction and In-Motion. Additionally the league adopted, in 2010, a Senior Men's Competitive Hardball Program, giving members a place to play long into their adult lives.
As a result of this hard work, our membership numbers are showing signs of growth and our financial status remains sustainable for the forseeable future. Our league continues to operate using volunteer members who collectively contribute more than 3,000 hours a year to our programs and are working hard to provide our youth safe and supportive team environments in which they can grow and prosper!
